The Field Museum
Description
Founded to house the biological and anthropological collections assembled for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, this massive museum of natural history still packs ’em in with more than 30 permanent exhibitions covering more than 300,000 square feet. Inside the permanent displays, you can get glared at by glowering dinos, marvel at ancient artifacts from a royal Egyptian tomb, undergo a lesson in cannibalism in the “Pacific Spirits” gallery or take a stroll through the Halls of Gems and Jade. Buzzworthy permanent exhibitions have made the Field their home in the last few years: “Ancient Americas” explores 30,000 years of history in North, South and Central America, and the glass-fronted “DNA Discovery Center” shows scientists at work tracking animal gene-sequences in order to protect the Earth’s biodiversity.
